though he is also eligible to play for Germany where he is nearing the five-year residential qualification period, Wales (his
mother's birth-country) or Canada, where he was born and grew up. While pals took part in basketball or ice hockey, Owen and his elder brother Dan honed their skills in the shadow of the Rockies and watched the Premiership highlights with their dad on television. Dan was good enough to be offered YTS terms by Bolton. He finished his education instead, but a twist of fate put Owen on the Champions League trial. A Calgary-based German coach with connections in Munich watched talented Owen develop from a promising 13-year-old left-sided midfielder and arranged a trial at Bayern when he was 16. Usually a substitute for Bayern Munich, the 20-year-old came of age at the end of the 2000/01 season when helpng his club to the Champions League title and impressing everyone in the process.
